Industry background

According to the authoritative definition of NIST, cloud computing service mode is divided into IaaS, PaaS and SaaS. The scale of cloud computing will continue to grow rapidly in the future. On the one hand, the popularization of smart cities and industrial 4.0 will promote the growth of Internet Data Center (IDC) and cloud services. On the other hand, it is obvious that IDC users will prefer to use public cloud due to convenient deployment and low cost of public cloud.

Market demand

The cloud computing was identified as an important area of future scientific and technological development in National "Twelfth Five-Year Plan" and "Thirteenth Five-Year Plan". A large number of relevant policies to support cloud computing development have been introduced in recent years. Moreover, the departments at all levels propose that the works of government departments, banks and other financial institutions should gradually transfer to the cloud, which means that a large number of orders will be brought to private clouds. In past two years, the Alibaba cloud, Tencent cloud and operators have won the bidding of local government cloud, obtaining the operation rights of the project and prospecting long-term profit from data operation.

Currently, China's cloud computing market only accounts for 5% of the global market, which is incompatible with China’s large population, business size and GDP share in the global market. In the public cloud market, China is lagged behind the United States at least five years. The U.S. cloud market has entered a mature stage, while China is still in the initial stage of expansion. It is expected that China's cloud computing market will continue to grow at a high speed from 2017 to 2020, and IaaS and SaaS will become the driving forces of market growth by 2020.

Functional framework

IaaS consists of computer servers, communication devices and storage devices, etc. It can provide IT infrastructure services such as computing, storage or network access to users on their demand. By virtualization technology, all kinds of computing devices can be virtualized as computing resources in virtual resource pool, storage devices can be virtualized as storage resources in virtual resource pool, and network devices can be virtualized as network resources in virtual resource pool.

PaaS is positioned to provide users with a set of supporting platforms for developing, running and operating application software through the Internet.

SaaS is a software application mode that provides software services through the Internet. In this mode, there is no need for the users to make a big investment in the construction of hardware, software and development team. Instead, they only need to pay a certain rental fee to enjoy the corresponding services through the Internet, while the manufacturers take the responsibility of the maintenance of the whole system.

Application scenarios

As far as IaaS is concerned, it seems obvious that the companies choose to use existing infrastructures according to the sub-billing scheme if they want to save investment costs in purchasing, managing and maintaining IT infrastructures. For the same reason, there are organizations that choose to use PaaS and try to accelerate development process on a platform that is available at any time to deploy applications.

Private cloud and hybrid cloud

To adopt the hybrid cloud approach allows testing application workloads, provides a comfortable environment without initial investment, and does not seem useless when workload testing fails.

The extension capabilities during limited usage peak times are usually well suited to hosting large infrastructure that may be rarely used. On the premise of pay-as-you-go, organizations may seek to master other capabilities and usability of the environment when needed.

With the help of cloud computing, you can easily choose an instant available environment tailored to your needs. This usually combines (but is not limited to) automatic configuration of physical and virtual resources.

It can use a large number of structured and unstructured data and take advantage of acquiring business value.

File storage

It supports access, store and retrieve files through any network interface. High availability, fast speed, large scalability and excellent security environment can be obtained anywhere at anytime. Users only need to pay for the storage fees they actually use, and in the process, there is no need to monitor the daily maintenance of the storage infrastructure.

In addition, data can be stored internally or externally and in a virtual storage pool hosted by a third party if customer requires.

Disaster recovery

It realizes faster and cheaper recovery from many different physical locations. In contrast, traditional DR sites have fixed assets, strict procedures and high costs.

Backups

Cloud-based backup is much better than previous backup methods. Data can be automatically assigned to any location on the network, without causing security threat, unavailability or capacity problems.
